Global Safety Tips

Keeping you safe — and ensuring your ability to make academic progress — are top priorities for NYU. As you prepare to spend the semester away from your home campus, we wanted to share with you some tips and best practices that will help to do so.

The University continuously monitors events in cities and countries around the globe, and adjusts security precautions, as necessary, based on the local environment. Should an urgent situation arise, the University maintains an emergency notification system, which delivers alerts via text message and email.

• Register your travel with your respective embassy or consulate – both while you are at your study away location, and anywhere else your travel plans may take you.
• Make sure to have a mobile phone with you whenever you’re away from the site – and be sure to keep it charged!
• If you are planning on traveling away from your site – even if only for a night — please be sure to register your trip in NYU Traveler, and let a member of your local site staff know.
• Please be sure that your site staff has a local contact phone number for you.
• Do your homework before you travel away from your site. Check for potential travel warnings for cities and countries to which you are thinking about traveling (the US State Department website is a good place to start.
• Always be fully aware of your surroundings. Avoid at-risk areas (in many cities, this could include locations that are very popular with tourists). And if during your travels you ever find yourself in a situation in which you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and leave.
• Whenever possible, travel in groups. Whether you’re going out for an evening, or are planning to explore the region (or beyond), go with friends!
• If you don’t know the person entering a building right after you, make sure they have their own ID — don’t allow “piggy-backing” at entrances to NYU academic centers and residence halls.
• If you ever have a question or concern about your safety – either at your site, or while you are traveling – either check with your local site staff, or call the NYU Public Safety Command Center (open 24/7) at +1.212.998.2222.
• Should you ever feel anxious or upset during your time away, or you simply want to have someone to speak to, please call the Wellness Exchange (24/7). You can always reach them at +1.212.443.9999, but many sites also have local numbers, which can be found here.

GeoBlue Health Insurance Emails Received

By now you should have received an email from NYU Student Insurance/GeoBlue with your certificate number and instructions about creating your GeoBlue profile. This was sent to your NYU email address only. Please register and bring your health insurance card with you.  

As a reminder, all students are still expected to maintain valid domestic health insurance over the course of the semester. GeoBlue is valid only for the dates of your study away program.

If you didn’t receive the email from GeoBlue, be sure to check your spam folder first, as they sometimes end up there. If you can’t find it, please notify me at jessica.levin@nyu.edu to ensure it is resent.  Rest assured that you will absolutely be covered.  

GeoBlue Health Insurance Emails To Come

For NYU students based in New York and visiting students from other U.S. based institutions:

All students studying with NYU Global Programs are enrolled in international health coverage through GeoBlue. Later in December you will receive an email from NYU Student Insurance/GeoBlue with instructions about creating your GeoBlue profile so you can print your health insurance card.

GeoBlue Enrollment emails will only be sent to your NYU email address, so if you have not yet set up your NYU email account, please do so asap. Do NOT delete this email!  Keep an eye on your spam folder, as they sometimes end up there.  We will let you know in an upcoming blog post when GeoBlue emails should have been received.

In addition to GeoBlue, all students are expected to maintain valid domestic health insurance over the course of their semester away. Students usually maintain the domestic insurance coverage that is offered through either their home institution or their parent/guardian’s insurance plan. GeoBlue is valid only for the dates of your study away program.

For students based at NYU Abu Dhabi:

You can expect to receive separate communications from your respective Health Centers as part of the regular annual enrollment process that will included your international health insurance enrollment.

As a reminder, do NOT cancel your domestic health insurance!

Visiting Students: NYU Email ONLY!

After today, December 1, we’ll be emailing all correspondence, including blog updates, to your NYU Email account ONLY. Please make sure you have activated it so you receive important communications such as your ebill and visa instructions!

It’s easy to do: see here for details, including how to set up mail forwarding so messages sent to your NYU Email address also go directly to the email address of your choice.

Pre-Departure Orientation Recap & Make-Up Quiz

For those who could not attend the in-person orientation, we missed you. There were some great questions and discussions with the Global Peer Mentors.  

While there is no way to replicate that experience, we are providing this version of the NYU Shanghai Pre-Departure Orientation Spring 2017 presentation for those who could not attend. Please ensure to read through the presentation in its entirety and complete this mandatory quiz to test your knowledge and make sure you know the essential information! This must be completed by Monday, November 28. 

Some key points to remember from the orientation:

• All students must arrive on Feb 2 and can check into the residence after 12 pm. On-site orientation is Mandatory on Feb 3.
• Housing is ONLY available during the dates of the program, Feb 2 – May 27!
• All class attendance and course related field trips are mandatory.  Do not book personal travel until you have arrived and confirmed your syllabi.
• Bring all the prescription drugs you will need for your entire stay. Make sure you talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for any medication you take regularly for the full 4 months. Do NOT ship medication overseas.
• All students must take a Chinese language course. If you are unsure about your level, take the CAS Chinese Mandarin Placement Exam. If you think you should place out, email shanghai.chinese.program@nyu.edu before Feb 2, 2017.

Enroll Your Trip with STEP!

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. By enrolling you will receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your study away country.

Mark Your Calendars & RSVP: November 14 – 21 Discussing Identity in a Global Context

All students are invited and encouraged to attend at least one event that’s part of the Workshop & Discussion series during the week of  November 14-21. This is also open to prospective students so feel free to bring a friend!  Please RSVP here for any conversations you want to attend!

Health Forms Available for Pick Up

All students  are required to submit health forms to NYU’s Student Health Center before studying away.

NYU students in NY – Please plan to stop by the Health Center before the end of the semester to pick up and complete your student Health History Form. You should go to 726 Broadway, 3rd Floor to pick up your forms.

NYU Abu Dhabi students & NYU New York students currently studying away – you don’t need to worry about these forms right now. If you need to submit any updated health information, the Health Center will reach out to you directly.

Visiting students – NYU’s Student Health Center will email your required medical forms to you starting November 15. Have questions?  Email health.requirements@nyu.edu or call 212-443-1199.

All forms should be completed and returned to the Health Center by Friday, December 1.

Updated Info: Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation

As mentioned previously, all students currently in the New York area are required to attend the Pre-Departure Orientation on Saturday, November 5.  The session for NYU Shanghai will be 9 am to 12 pm in Kimmel. More details to come!

If you are unable to attend because of religious observance, you must email me by October 21.  Alternate arrangements will be made for those students as well as students currently studying outside of New York.
