Important Travel Reminders

The time is almost here to leave for China, but before you depart for the airport make sure you have all of your immigration needs taken care of! It is important to keep any immigration related paperwork on your person/in your carry-on luggage and ready for your arrival in China.

Two important reminders for best practices when traveling abroad:

1.     In order to board your international flight you will need your passport.  You should have copies of your passport elsewhere.  OGS recommends keeping a color copy of your passport and visa separately in your carry-on luggage.  You should also have access to a digital encrypted copy of your passport and visa online that can be obtained from any computer.  Additionally, you may want to leave a copy of your passport and visa with a parent or guardian, or whomever you trust and would call in an emergency. If your passport/visa is lost or stolen having a copy of such may help expedite getting a replacement.

2.    After you arrive at your study away site, you should register with your local Embassy or Consulate.  U.S. citizens can register with the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program     which will automatically alert the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate to your presence in country.  Non-U.S. citizens should register with the relevant home country Embassy or Consulate abroad.

Reminder: Complete the Visa Status Survey & Upload a copy of your Visa

OGS sent a mandatory Visa Status Survey to all students in December (unless you have already informed us that you have obtained your visa or if we know that a visa is not required based on your citizenship). Please fill out this survey as soon as possible so we know where you are in the visa process. It is imperative that you let us know if you are struggling, are in need of assistance or are delayed in applying for your visa. If this is the case, please contact OGS immediately at ogs.outbound@nyu.edu or 212-998-4242.

If you have already received your visa, OGS requires that you upload a copy using the Visa Upload. If you have not received your visa yet, please indicate this on the Visa Status Survey and then upload a copy of your visa to us once you receive it.

Visa Documents

If you recently submitted a copy of your passport and the Student Information Form to OGS, please note that the support letters you need for your visa application will not be available until the university reopens after the winter break.

If you have not yet completed both of the above steps, your documents cannot be requested until we receive them which means they will not be requested until after the university reopens. Please complete the above today to avoid any additional delays. These are past due! Questions should be directed to ogs.outbound@nyu.edu; 212-998-4242.

Offices Closing for Winter Break

NYU’s Office of Global Programs and Office of Global Services, as well as most other departments around NYU, will be closed for the winter break starting at 4pm EST on Friday, December 23rd. We will reopen on Wednesday, January 4th at 9am EST.  Both the Office of Global Programs and the Office of Global Services will not be monitoring voicemail or emails during this time.

We understand that questions may come up while our office is closed – if so, please use the “Search” tool within this blog to see if we have covered it already (in many cases, we have!). This blog is meant to be your main resource of things to know and do regarding London, and can continue to assist in answering your questions even when we are not available.

Happy New Year and Best Wishes this Holiday Season!

Apply for your Chinese Visa!

If you have not yet applied for your Chinese visa, please do not delay any further. You can find instructions about the visa process here. If you are applying for your visa at a Chinese Consulate outside of New York, please be advised that the processing time might be longer and you could be asked for additional documents. Please be sure to check the requirements for your specific Chinese Consulate or Embassy.

Please note if you have not picked up or contacted OGS to mail your visa documents by December 23rd at noon you must wait until January 4th.

It is imperative that you let us know if you are struggling, are in need of assistance or are delayed in applying for your visa. Number of Entries Granted at Discretion of Consulate

In the sample visa application for item 2.2, we instruct all students to select ‘multiple entries valid for 6 months from date of issue.’ Checking this box does not guarantee that you will get multiple entries. The decision as to whether you will get one entry or multiple entries is solely up to the consulate officer issuing the visa. The staff at OGS has no control or influence in this decision.

If you are granted a single entry on your visa, please keep in mind that the staff at NYU Shanghai should be able to assist you in obtaining at least one additional entry once you arrive in Shanghai. If you would like more information or have any concerns about your travel plans, please contact Aaron Reynolds (aaron.reynolds@nyu.edu).
